Herbert Thompson Primary School
Olympic and Paralympic themed activities to engage and inspire children

Focus

  • Develop an inclusive week of sport, focusing on a range of Olympic activities, for the whole school; children, staff and parents.

Who took part?

  • Approximately 380 pupils, staff and parents.

What happened?

  • A grand opening ceremony was held on Monday 29 June. The whole school lined up outside and an Olympic-style flame (lava lamp) was passed from child to child, from nursery to Year 6. House captains took the flame into the hall for a whole school assembly. Each captain recited the Olympic and Paralympic motto and explained the values of friendship, fair play, honour, peace and glory, and how the Olympic spirit encourages us to be the ‘best we can be’.
  • The flame was kept alight for the duration of the week and the Herbert Thompson Olympic Flag was flown.
  • On the Tuesday and Wednesday nursery and reception sports took place, including team games such as relay running, throwing and jumping.
  • A sports day for Years 1-6 took place on the Thursday, held at the National Indoor Athletic Centre in Cardiff. The school was split into 18 house teams. Teams rotated around 18 athletics-themed stations, which provided an opportunity to display all their athletic skills and score points for their house. The winning houses were rewarded with a place on the podium.
  • A closing ceremony was held on the Friday to mark the end of the week. The ceremony featured a presentation to mark sporting achievements for the week, and whole year.
  • The Olympic flag was lowered by the house captains and handed to Year 5 students as the hosts of next year’s games.

What was the impact?

  • The week gave pupils a sense of what the Olympic and Paralympic Games is, and a real understanding of the spirit and values of the Games.
  • It was a fantastic, inspiring week, enjoyed by students and staff.
