Delivering a competitive multi-sport, ‘Youth Games’ event to encourage primary school pupils to try something new

Focus

  • To enable pupils, leaders and staff to experience a large scale, competitive multi-sport event.
  • To introduce students and schools to new, innovative activities.
  • To embrace Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week and the Cultural Olympiad.
  • To promote the work of the SSP and East Cambridgeshire Sport.
  • To develop school-club links.

Who is taking part?

  • Approximately 600 Key Stage 2 young people from 10 schools.
  • 50 young leaders.
  • Ten local sports clubs.

What is planned?

  • The multi-sport event builds on the work previously done by East Cambridgeshire District Council to promote National School Sport Week and the Cultural Olympiad.
  • Activities for the day have been chosen to link with the National Competition Framework, local clubs and to fit around the idea of ‘trying something new’.
  • Young people will be split into groups to take part in the various sports on offer:
    • Year 3/4 mini-tennis and Quadkids athletics
    • Year 5/6 quicksticks hockey and Quadkids athletics and tag rugby
    • a taster village to enable students to try a variety of other sports and promote local clubs.
  • The event will have an Olympic theme with each school allocated a country based on the 2008 Olympic Games medals table.
  • Schools will be asked to promote the culture of their country by wearing t-shirts, bringing artwork and putting together displays. There will also be a parade with each national anthem being played.
  • Prizes will be awarded in an Olympic format, i.e. gold, silver and bronze with certificates also given to those young people displaying the core Olympic and Paralympic values.
