OnyoURMarks@20past12! Young Ambassadors inspiring schools to get active during Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week

Focus

  • Our aim was to raise the profile of London 2012 and inspire all people to become more active through the Young Ambassador project, 'On Your Marks, Get Set, Go'.
  • We also hoped to raise awareness of the Olympic and Paralympic Values and ensure that all schools will be part of LOCOG’s GET SET network by 2011. This year we focused on OnyoURMarks@20past12, a Young Ambassador (YA) initiative to get everyone active at 12.20pm on Friday 2 July 2010.

Who took part?

  • 5-16 year olds from all schools in the SSP, school staff, parents and the community.
  • Eight Olympic and Paralympic champions (Adam Whitehead, Chris Cook, Tim Prendergast, Craig Heap, Alex Danson, Kerry Jane Williams, Jenna Downing and Donna Hartley MBE) the Mayor, councillors and representatives from the CSP and NGBS.

What happened?

  • Olympic and Paralympic champions and VIPS met at Wilmslow High School for a welcome breakfast on Friday 2 July.
  • Young Ambassadors gave an inspirational, short presentation around how they inspire young people to participate in physical activity, before taking their 'own' champion to a partner primary school. The champion spoke to the children about how important it is to be physically active and to always do their best in everything they do.
  • At 12.20pm, all schools (approximately 15,000 young people) participated in OnyoURMarks@20past12, an SSP-wide dance event. The YAs led the countdown to OnyoURMarks@20past12 by ‘YAing’!
  • Throughout the day YAs and schools were tasked with videoing /photographing and recording the visits. All schools were challenged to blog the event on the GET SET website in order to share their fantastic ideas.
  • Three children from each primary were presented with a ‘Values Medal’. This medal was given to the pupils who demonstrated the Olympic and Paralympic Values during the week.
  • Schools also delivered cross-curricular activities around the Olympic and Paralympic Values throughout the week.
  • Primaries were challenged by the YAs to get as many young people doing three or more hours of physical activity during the week. Activities included a primary Olympic Games, each school inviting at least four link clubs to deliver activities and new activities offered including archery, fencing, rowing, handball, volleyball, table tennis, Boccia and curling.

Impact

  • An additional 40 school-club links have been developed across the SSP and over 100 young people have joined an external club.
  • All 48 SSP schools are now actively involved in the Young Ambassadors ‘On yoUR Marks, Get Set, Go’ project and are creating activities linked to the yoUR Sport programme.
  • Primary schools have developed Young Ambassadors in their schools to lead on the ‘On yoUR Marks’ project, creating an additional 100 Young Ambassadors across the SSP.
  • One Young Ambassador accepted to work for LOCOG for the next two years and one Young Ambassador accepted on a work placement at LOCOG.
