Longdon St Mary’s Primary School
Using Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week to embed the Olympic and Paralympic values into the school

Focus

  • To get the children participating in, and experiencing, as many sporting activities as possible.
  • To develop a sports week centred on the Olympic and Paralympic Games and the Olympic values of friendship, courage, excellence, determination, inspiration and equality.

Who took part?

  • All of our 54 pupils, ranging from Reception to Year 6, were involved in every aspect of the week.

What happened?

  • The activities were as varied as possible to appeal to all the children. As well as playing a range of different sports, we took a cross-curricular approach and incorporated literacy, geography, history, art, drama and music, all with a focus on the Olympic and Paralympic values.
  • Twelve different intra-school competitions were organised over four afternoons. Students were put into teams and awards were given and individual medals for those who best demonstrated the Olympic and Paralympic values.
  • We put up a sports ‘Q&A’ board, where children posted their sporting questions and pupils/teachers and parents were challenged to find answers to some of the questions over the week.
  • Students made a sports pledge and created Olympic torches and team banners.
  • Students visited a 'Museum on the Move' bus to learn about Olympic and Paralympic Games through the ages.

What was the impact?

  • The children had a truly memorable week, which they still talk about. We saw many pupils challenge themselves and develop physically, emotionally and socially.
  • The older children became creative, enthusiastic and effective leaders and the younger children grew in confidence.
  • It raised the profile and interest of many different sports in school and has led to us offering a wider range of both curriculum and out-of-school-hours sport.
  • The week was a fantastic success and had such an impact that the children can’t wait to do it all again in 2010!
