Royles Brook Primary School
A week of activity inspired by the Olympic and Paralympic values
Focus
- To encourage children to be inspired by and learn through the Olympic and Paralympic values.
- Support each child to take an active involvement in his/her own personal fitness and well-being.
Who took part?
- 260 children from Foundation Stage (reception), Key Stage 1 (Year 1-2) and Key Stage 2 (Year 3-6).
What happened?
- The Royles Brook PE teacher provided each staff member with a sport-based information pack to plan for the week.
- The school sports pledge was introduced in assembly at the beginning of the week as a starting point. The motivational DVD provided by Lloyds TSB was used to inspire the children.
- The Olympic and Paralympic values were highlighted to pupils, with a focus on how these can be applied in their day-to-day life. The Get Set 2012 website was used as a catalyst for this.
- As part of the week, we delivered the school sports day and the Tesco Great School Run, in which every class took part in a 2km fun run (dressed as their favourite sports celebrity).
- In follow up work, the Great School Run was measured and analysed by the children in numeracy lessons.
What was the impact?
- The children enjoyed the week and took part in a variety of different sporting activities. Students demonstrated their knowledge of Olympic and Paralympic values and exercised these during the activities.
- The Great School Run was seen as a real challenge and achievement for a lot of children who may not have normally taken part in sport.
- The week created a fantastic teaching and learning opportunity, allowing staff to link lessons to sport; it was motivational for staff as well as children. Staff are already looking forward to the 2010 event!
"It was the best school week I have ever had!"
