Breaking the skipping world record!
On Tuesday 30 June 2009 at 12.00pm, pupils from Staffordshire, Stoke on Trent and Lincolnshire School Sport Partnerships attempted to break the world record for skipping simultaneously.

Focus

  • Promote physical activity and the work that all schools are doing to ensure pupils are accessing five hours per week of physical activity and sport.
  • Promote a multi-agency approach to developing healthy and active young people.

Who took part?

  • 55,000 pupils from over 500 primary and secondary schools.

What happened?

  • On Tuesday 30 June at 12.00pm approximately 55,000 primary and secondary pupils attempted to break the skipping world record at Thomas Alleyne’s High School.
  • At each school, pupils skipped continuously for three minutes to break the record which stood at 19,000, set in April 2009.
  • Skipping alongside the pupils were a number of Olympic, Paralympic and international athletes from a range of sports.
  • Olympic badminton star, Gail Emms took part in the record attempt and also led a badminton session at the school.
  • Independent assessors were onsite to verify the number of pupils participating.
  • Following the record attempt, each pupil received their own skipping rope and a certificate.
  • Money raised from the event was donated to the British Heart Foundation and the Raynaud’s & Scleroderma Association.
